When we think about managing our weight, diet and exercise usually come first. But there is another part of the picture that deserves attention: the gut.
Far more than simply processing food, the gastrointestinal system is involved in digestion, nutrient metabolism and communication between the gut and brain. Within it lives a complex community of microorganisms known collectively as the gut microbiome.
Research increasingly suggests that this intestinal ecosystem is associated with aspects of metabolic health and body-weight regulation.
That doesn't mean that changing your gut bacteria is a shortcut to weight loss. Body weight is influenced by many factors, including diet, activity, genetics, hormones, sleep and overall health.
But it does mean that looking after the gut can form an important part of a more complete approach to wellbeing and weight management.
So, what is the connection?
